"There is nothing stronger than a broken woman, who has rebuilt herself. "
- Hannah Gadsby
November 7th, 2020, will always be remembered by me, as a universally good day; a day when all of humanity, scored a win. It matters not if you live in America, or your political allegiance, or your skepticism, we can simply all agree, that the news about America's 46th President, is a win for the world. I remember feeling hopeful, for the first time in years, as I scrolled through updates on CNN. After a long and anxious week, we finally took down a would-be dictator, a man who has killed countless innocents and threatened to do a lot more.
I cried multiple times over the weekend, simply as I realized the historic impact of this moment. As I tuned in for the President-elect acceptance speech on Saturday, I could already feel the waterworks flow.
I watched as Kamala Harris, the first female woman of color Vice President, accepted her new title. I felt the lights inside millions of young girls and women in America, all set aflame, with this one moment. It's magical. She spoke with grace, she carried herself with poise, and she assured us like a caring mother, that everything will be all right. She's not perfect; but she is positive, hopeful, and smart. She knows how to lead, and no matter how you perceive her decisions, this is her audition tape for the 2024 election. She has to prove , that a woman in power, with all the support behind her, is a symbol for change.
And she's already done that. She is a woman on a mission, and we all know she will get there.
Then, our president-elect, Joe Biden walked up - A person we couldn't really hear until now, because his voice was always overshadowed by an embarrassment of a toddler. He had something to say, but a certain bully decided to stomp and cry while we couldn't take our eyes off. For any reasons that you have against Biden , let us also not forget, this is a huge step towards indifference about the news. I realized that I shouldn't be this involved in politics. That's not my job. Yes, I need to care about global issues, but the due diligence is why we have politicians. Thats why we have a President. And since our former President couldn't do the job, we had to absorb it all. Biden takes away the mental burden of being involved. He's not going to fix the mess that is America , but he is going to give these problems a vocal platform.
This is the first time, in centuries, when systemic racism was addressed, in a Presidents acceptance speech. The first transgender mention, a clear acceptance of climate change within America, a promise to deliver to the Black community; all of this, addressed on the platform of a President . They will be held accountable for these commitments. There will be questions, there will be scrutiny. And they look like they can deliver. It may not be everything ,but they will do better for a lot of oppressed voices.
Biden brings with him his amazing family ,with a partner who is an educator - a voice that knows the unfair life of a teacher and the respect they deserve, now belongs to the FLOTUS. We have a rescue dog in the white house- a dog that spent part of his life in a dog shelter, has now made it to the White House. This is ...a lot. It's a lot of lights; a lot of, as Biden mentioned, possibilities.
And it’s enough for now; Thats all the people wanted - an assurance. We can take care of the rest. We picked our leaders and they have begun to lead. In less than 24 hours of Bidens announcement , there’s already a Covid task force ready to work. Canada and Europe ,among others, have reached out for support. The streets were happy, people were elated and celebrating. For the first time in ages, The United States of America felt... united.
And Trump? As far as we're concerned, he may as well be dead. Trust me, I'm well aware that Donald Trumps plague is far from over; and the consequences of these past 4 years, are truly going to unfold in time. But today, we showed him how much power he has over us, and it’s nothing. We reduced him to nothing. In less than a day. This is what it took - the power of voice. Today will be remembered as the day when the posterboy for rich white men, lost. Trump took away my hope in America ; he did it for millions more. America had never died, but her moral representation was despicable; we were a laughing stock on the global stage. And now, we have a chance; a chance for change and redemption. America asked, and the people delivered. Whatever happens now, we're in it.
Trump was the worst they could do, and we showed them how we make a comeback. So yeah, I think THAT win, was enough of a slap in the face for America to be like, we need to get our shit together. And she will; America always been a great country, now we'll get to see her prove it.
This is not our solution. This is not the answer we've been fighting for. But it's the first step. We're getting there.
For those living in America, the real battle has begun. And for those beyond, you will be spectators. Remember that whole paradigm shift that we were talking about since the start of the pandemic? Well... America just entered the game.
We got through what can arguably be one of the most stressful and tense periods in human history. We survived a Trump presidency, and now... now we're unleashed, and we've hopefully learnt a lot.
America is on a comeback
Let's see how she plays.
